"It is a marvel that
we are here among the beautiful things at all; the rocks, the wind and the
cryptic stars.
We seem to be both comforted and threatened in this garden
of Eden, gently soothed and encouraged
by an indulgent friend, while the shadow of the same now indifferent predator,
moves implacably among the fabric of moments.
We have been invited to the celebration of life and we
attend not only at our immense pleasure, but we also attend at our peril.
There seems little point in lodging a complaint with our
host about the bitter-sweet nature of this intoxicating invitation.
It is said that the God of moments both gives capriciously
and takes away just as indifferently.
We are the masters of our destiny while visiting the
beautiful garden, and accepting the boundaries of beauty might well be the most
complete insight we have come here to enjoy.
My paintings explore
the personality of our ambiguous host. They trace the nature of the
celebrations and the responses we make to this 'big day out'.
I love this beautiful garden, and I am intoxicated by my
unexpected invitation.
